Every year Utah High School students compete for financial rewards and the opportunity to speak at various Freedom Festival events. Students from 9th-12th grade are invited to submit special orations with a theme based on this quote from the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Entry deadline is March 16, 2018. Six finalists then compete in a live environment to determine an overall winner. See below for more details on how to enter. Final Competition, Saturday, May 6, 10 am

Speech Theme

You may speak on anything that goes along the theme based on this quote by Peter Marshall, “May we think of freedom not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right.”  Entry deadline is March 16, 2018.

Contest Rules
  • MARCH 16, 2018 – Deadline for all speeches to be postmarked or uploaded electronically.
  • The theme is based on this quote by Peter Marshall, “May we think of freedom not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right.”
  • Open to all 9th – 12th grade Utah students.
  • Register and submit online by March 14, 2017.
  • Speech must be your own work (family or friends may critique your speech but cannot write it for you).
  • Speech must be memorized (no notes allowed).
  • Time limit is 5 minutes (penalty if speech is too short or too long).
  • The speech should be positive and hopeful, expressing ideas on how to build America and patriotism, while discussing sound principles of freedom.
  • Professional dress is requested for presentation.
  • Decision of the judges is final.
  • Finalist speaks at the Patriotic Service.

You must submit your video by March 14, 2017.

How to Upload to Youtube
  1. Go to
  2. In the upper right hand corner of the home page click on “sign in”
  3. If you have a google account you can login with that and go to the next step. If you don’t have a google login then click on “sign up for YouTube” and then fill out the necessary info.
  4. Once you’re logged in click on the link at the top of the screen that says “upload”
  5. Click on the button that says “video upload” and then upload your video.
  1. Make sure to fill out the Title and Description fields are filled out appropriately
  2. In the privacy section be sure to check the “Public” option.
  3. Click on the save button at the bottom of the screen
  4. You may have to wait a while for your video to upload, after your video is done precessing go to your published video page.
  5. Copy the url link and paste it in the filed on the submission form.
