This July 4, 2024!
We hope that part of your Independence Day celebration includes our Freedom Run 10K, 5K or the Mayor’s one mile Fun Run sponsored by Intermountain Healthcare! The annual run has become an integral part of America’s Freedom Festival as thousands of participants at all levels and abilities join this invigorating event. These past several years have been really fun! The race has improved each year. We encourage you to get decked out in patriotic garb for the run. We have seen a lot of great costumes and would love to see more. “Uncle Sam” running on stilts is a crowd favorite. Give us some Red, White and Blue! See race details below.

PARKING ANNOUNCMENT

Arrive early! Some roads around the race/parade route close as early as 5:30am. Access to the race start lines and parking is best achieved by approaching from the west and north of BYU campus. Due to limited parking on BYU campus near the start lines for the Freedom Run, we HIGHLY recommend parking at Level Edwards Stadium or the Marriott Center and walking to the respective start lines.  This will also make your exit from the event much easier due to traffic restrictions around the central and southern parts of BYU campus on race day.

Race Start Locations

All races start at 7:00 am

  • 5K start located at corner of 800 N & 150 E (Brick Oven Pizza)
  • 10K start located on Birch Ave, at north end of Kiwanis Park
  • 1M start located inside Kiwanis Park
  • ALL RACES – Start at 7am and finish at entrance to Kiwanis Park
Packet-pickup

Packet-pickup will be on July 3rd ONLY, at Provo Rec Center in the Multi-Purpose room (east end of facility). We will be open from 9:00am till 4:00pm. We love our volunteers, and we know you do, too! Please be courteous to them when picking up your swag or by ensuring someone else can get your bib and swag if you cannot be to the pick up before 4pm.

At packet-pickup, you will receive your bib number with a timing chip attached, your race shirt, race medal, and possible additional swag. You need to show ID to pick up your packet. We do allow family members to pick up packets of their relations/friends, but they must sign for the goods!

Disclaimer: Shirts and other goodies are distributed at packet-pickup. They are not available to those that miss the event. You are buying admission to the event, not the bag of goodies.

Timing

This year, we will have timing chips built right into your racing bib. Timing works best when you wear our racing bib on the front of your shirt or shorts, and have the bib on the top layer of clothing.

Starting etiquette

Runner positioning should coincide with your bib number. We will assign bib numbers based on your self-reported expected pace. Ultimately we really need the fast runners in the front and the slower runners toward the back at the starting line.  Remember: your official chip timing does not start until you cross the start mat, so keeping an order to the speed of runners keeps the race flowing smoothly!

Strollers

If you intend to push a wheeled device (stroller), we require that you start with the other wheeled devices after the runners have gone. Strollers can really jam up the works and we really don’t want any collisions between runners and strollers. Please be very attentive of all the runners and walkers around you. Give runners a wide berth if you pass them.

Other Details

No bicycles, unicycles, or other wheeled devices (exception: strollers) allowed on the course.

On-course Water Stations

The 10K has two on-course water stations. One just after the 3M mark and one just after the 5M mark. We want to keep you hydrated!

Post Race Food

We will load up on post-race refreshments. It is tough to have a full selection of everything by the end of the race. No guarantees, but we will do our best to keep everything stocked to the very end.

Parking

Close parking is a challenge. We encourage you to park in the big BYU parking lots at the Marriott Center and Levell Edwards (football) stadium. Some side street parking can be found as well near Kiwanis Park. We prohibit parking on the race route. If you are running the 5K, we HIGHLY encourage you to park in the BYU football stadium parking lots and walk south through campus to the 5K start line on 800 N. It is much easier to arrive and depart from north of the race area!
