We hope that part of your Independence Day celebration includes our Freedom Run 10K, 5K or the Mayor’s one mile Fun Run. The annual run has become an integral part of America’s Freedom Festival as thousands of participants at all levels and abilities join this invigorating event. These past several years have been really fun! The race has improved each year. The number of runners has increased as well. We believe that we will have 5,500 runners this year. We encourage you to get decked out in patriotic garb for the run. We have seen a lot of great costumes and would love to see more. “Uncle Sam” running on stilts is a crowd favorite. Give us some Red, White and Blue! See race details below.

Parking Announcement

Due to construction on 700 N, parking lots just south of the BYU campus will be inaccessible.  We HIGHLY RECOMMEND you park at the BYU football stadium or Marriott Center and walk to the 10K or 5K start line locations.

Packet-pickup will be on Monday, July 3rd ONLY at the Provo Rec Center on Cougar Court. We will be open from 9:00am till 6:00pm.  Fact is we have difficulty staffing additional days of packet pickup. We love our volunteers! You could be one of them!

At packet-pickup, you will receive your bib number with a timing chip attached, your race shirt, and a bag of goodies (if sponsors give us some goodies). You need to show ID to pick-up your packet. We do allow family members to pick-up packets of their relations but they must sign for the goods!

If after you pick-up your packet you do not come to the race, you are responsible for getting the timing chip back to the Freedom Festival offices. (Their address is printed on the chip, which looks like a half a credit card with holes in it.) All racers are expected to return their chip at the finish line. A $5 fee is charged for all missing chips.

Disclaimer: Shirts and other goodies are distributed at packet-pickup. They are not available to those that miss the event. You are buying admission to the event, not the bag of goodies.

This year, we will have timing chips built right into your racing bib.  No more clipping chips from your running shoes!!  Timing works best when you wear our racing bib on the front of your shirt or shorts, and have the bib on the top layer of clothing.

Starting etiquette

Runner positioning should coincide with your bib number. We will assign bib numbers based on your self-reported expected pace. Ultimately we really need the fast runners in the front and the slower runners toward the back at the starting line.  Remember: your official chip timing does not start until you cross the start mat, so keeping an order to the speed of runners keeps the race flowing smoothly!

If you intend to push a wheeled device (stroller), we require that you start with the other wheeled devices after the runners have gone. Strollers can really jam up the works and we really don’t want any collisions between runners and strollers. Please be very attentive of all the runners and walkers around you. Give runners a wide berth if you pass them.

Other Details

No bicycles, unicycles, or other wheeled devices (exception: strollers) allowed on the course.

On-course Water Stations

The 10K has two on-course water stations. One just after the 3M mark and one just after the 5M mark. We want to keep you hydrated!

Post Race Food

We will load up on post-race refreshments. It is tough to have a full selection of everything by the end of the race. No guarantees, but we will do our best to keep everything stocked to the very end.

Close parking is a challenge. To park near the Kiwanis park, we encourage you to park in the big BYU parking lots surrounding the law school, surrounding the Taylor building on 9th East and around the elementary school. Some side street parking can be found as well. We prohibit parking on the race route. If you are running the 5K, you might want to park in the parking lots near the 5K start at 800N and 600E (approach from the south as 800 N will be closed).
