Flag Retirement Ceremony (free)

Start Time   Location   Date(s)
7:00 p.m.   Macey's Food & Drug Store, 1230 N. and 500 W., Provo   June 14, 2008

More than a thousand people will converge at the parking lot of Macey's Food & Drug Store on the corner of 1230 N. and 500 W. to honor Flag Day by observing or participating in the annual Flag Retirement Ceremony.  Pre-event activities begin at 7 p.m. and include musical numbers, community groups such as the American Red Cross, military vehicles, and the Provo Fire Department's "Learn Not to Burn" campaign.  The formal flag ceremony will begin promptly at 8 p.m. Provo City will bring  in several bleachers, and those attending are also welcome to bring their own chairs. "This is a great family event that teaches patriotism and love for the flag", says event chair James Brown. "It has become a well-attended evening, so I recommend you come early to get a good seat."  The event respectfully retires flags that have become so tattered and worn that they no longer represent the great sacrifices and values of the United States.

According to the U.S. Flag Code, which is a federal law, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning" (36 USC 19 176K).

Boy Scout Troop 999 will serve as hosts for the ceremony again this year. They welcome all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venture Scouts, and Girl Scouts in full uniform to participate in the retirement of the flags. Contact James Brown at (801) 226-7776 if you would like to participate. The flag retirement ceremony begins with a patriotic speaker followed by the dignified retirement of hundreds of worn and tattered flags that have served our country well but are no longer fit for display.

Those with flags that need to be retired are invited to bring them to the event or drop them off at Macey's Food & Drug, or the Freedom Festival Office prior to June 14.
