2012 Speech Contest Rules and Guidelines
Theme:
American Values: Family, Freedom, God, and Country

All speeches will be videotaped and mailed or uploaded by March 30, 2012
Prizes: 1st place - $750, 2nd place - $400, 3rd place - $300, 3 Honorable Mentions - $150
CONTEST RULES
- MARCH 30, 2012 – Deadline for all speeches to be postmarked or uploaded electronically
- Open to all 10th - 12th grade Utah students
- Register online by March 23, 2012 and submit video by March 30, 2012.
- Speech must be your own work (family or friends may critique your speech but cannot write it for you).
- Speech must be memorized (no notes allowed).
- Time limit is 5 minutes (penalty if speech is too short or long).
- Professional dress requested for presentation.
- Decision of the judges is final.
- By invitation: final division April 20, 2012
- Finalist speaks at the Patriotic Service at the McKay Events Center July 1, 2012
- Students may also enter the essay contest, film contests, or storytelling contest (1st-9th grades).

Submitting DVD by mail
Your DVD must be postmarked by March 30, 2012 and mailed to the following address:

Upload your video to YouTube and email the link to Julie Maddox at jmamaddox@gmail.com
How-to upload a video to YouTube
- Go to http://www.youtube.com/
- In the upper right hand corner of the home page click on “sign in”
- If you have a google account you can login with that and go to the next step. If you don’t have a google login then click on “sign up for YouTube” and then fill out the necessary info.
- Once you’re logged in click on the link at the top of the screen that says “upload”
- Click on the button that says “video upload” and then upload your video.
- Make sure to fill out the Title and Description fields are filled out appropriately
- In the privacy section be sure to check the “Public” option.
- Click on the save button at the bottom of the screen
- You may have to wait a while for your video to upload, after your video is done precessing go to your published video page.
- Copy the url link and send it to jmamaddox@gmail.com
HELPFUL HINTS
- Extemporaneous speeches do not work. Write your text and then memorize it.
- Emphasize the positive. Be uplifting.
- Remember: This is not a debate. You are not trying to win an intellectual
- argument.
- Use of specific examples, quotations, and clearly stated principles will strengthen your speech.
- This is a celebration of America and the good it represents.
