Contest Rules

  • Students will submit a video tape or DVD of themselves performing their speech. The video recording must be an unedited recording, videotaped from one camera in one location.
  • Speech must be your own work (Family or friends may critique your speech, but cannot write it for you.)
  • Speech must be memorized (no notes allowed).
  • Speeches will be judged on adherence to theme.
  • Time limit is 5 to 7 minutes (penalty if speech is too short or too long).
  • Professional dress requested for presentation.
  • Decision of the judges is final.

Six finalists will be chosen and invited to participate in the final competition on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Provo City Council Chambers.

Helpful Hints

  • Extemporaneous speeches do not work. Write your text and then memorize it.
  • Emphasize the positive. Be uplifting.
  • Remember: This is not a debate. You are not trying to win an intellectual argument.
  • Use of specific examples, quotations and clearly stated principles will strengthen your speech.
  • This is a celebration of America and the good it represents.

Prizes

  • 1st place $750.00 1st place winner speaks at the Patriotic Service at BYU
  • 2nd place $250.00
  • 3rd place $250.00
  • 3 Merit awards of $150.00 each
